Work / Life balance.
It’s been some years since I last kept a video production blog. Starting Spellbinder Productions in April 2017 there’s not been a great deal of spare time to actually keep one. Time has been spent delivering work, growing the business, embracing new challenges and striving to be the best I can be. For my business and my new little family. I started the business about six weeks before the birth of my first child. Now, some might say this was a little crazy. But if you ask me there is no time like the present. What’s the worst that can happen?
Living in the present is important you don’t know what’s around the corner in life. But you also need to try and plan for the future. That can be tricky in an industry where new technology is always coming out. Immediacy is something that we see in the technologies we use in video production. It’s something we see more and more in how the media we produce is consumed. And there’s no sign of this relenting. I love this fact about digital media. It’s something I spent a whole lot of time on when I undertook my Ph.D. in film studies at Exeter University. My current work is a far cry from the new media theories and academia that was my world during my Ph.D. and I’ve learned a great deal in the four years since I graduated.
So let’s begin.
And so this where I begin. I want this blog to document the journey of my business and my career in the industry I love. I’ve worked in production in one way or another for over twenty-five years, starting out as an actor in television as a child. Growing up around cameras, filming, actors, lighting, grips, and locations gave me a really privileged insight into the industry.
After many years of hard work, it’s a joy to finally see the progression and the standard of the creative output improving. That’s how it should be. In this business, you need to progress and to a certain extent, the old phrase “you’re only as good as your last job” is perhaps truer than ever. There’s a lot of competition out there and you need to be the best you can be. So, I hope that this blog will inspire others, inform, educate, and bring confidence to those that we work with at Spellbinder. Expect to find, news, reviews, musings, and all things video production.
